World War 1 began in 28th July 1914 and ended till 11th November 1918. There were many battles that New Zealand were involved in such as the Gallipoli Campaign, Palestine Campaign also the Western Front (Passchendaele). Over 100 000 New Zealand soldiers fought over seas and over 16 000 soldiers died and 40 000 wounded and injured during the New Zealand's involvement in the First World War. New Zealand was allied to Britain, France and Russia during World War 1 fighting the German Empire lead by Kaiser Wilhelm and their allies or Austria Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. One of the many contributions to the start of World War 1 was the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. New Zealand allied with Britain at first to prove themselves to the Crown (The King) but at the later end New Zealand did it for themselves forming a national identity for the Kiwis.
